How Invisalign® Works, and Other FAQs

Amy Uncategorized

For many patients, the trouble with crooked teeth is that it negatively affects the appearance of their smiles. If you asked your dentist, however, you may realize that the more significant trouble with crooked teeth is how they affect your bite’s balance, as well as your long-term dental health. Still, appearance and self-confidence may be the main reasons why you decide to straighten your teeth, in which case metal braces may not seem like the optimal option. Fortunately, you may be able to achieve the healthy, beautiful, symmetrical smile you wish without the need for traditional braces by opting for Invisalign® clear aligners, instead.

Questions About Invisalign® Clear Braces

What are the clear aligners made of?

The innovation behind Invisalign lies in its approach to orthodontic treatment, which utilizes a series of aligners rather than more conventional bracket-and-wire braces. The clear, nearly-invisible aligners are crafted from advanced acrylic that is durable, but thin enough to rest comfortably over your teeth.

How does Invisalign® work without brackets and wires?

Conventional braces rely on brackets and wires to produce continuous pressure to gently correct imperfectly- aligned teeth. By contrast, Invisalign incorporates a series of aligners that fit over your teeth, each one designed to guide your teeth through a certain phase of movement. By changing the aligners every couple of weeks, you can continue the path of movement that will ultimately bring your teeth into more attractive, and more functional, positions.

Is everyone a candidate for Invisalign®?

Despite its minimalist approach to orthodontic treatment, Invisalign is still a viable option for most cases of malocclusion (crooked teeth). However, if your teeth are severely misaligned, or if you are still a child whose teeth and jaws have not fully developed, then you may require traditional braces.
