A FOCUS ON COMFORT WITH SEDATION DENTISTRY
Dr. Keelan is the only general dentist in Butler, PA certified and trained in sedation dentistry. For some patients, the prospect of visiting the dentist can generate feelings of anxiety, and in some cases, fear. Such apprehension can cause patients to hesitate or neglect to seek necessary dental care. For those with special needs, the problem may not be anxiety, but rather a condition that makes it difficult for the patient to sit calmly long enough to receive treatment. To help ease anxiety and make dental care more comfortable, we offer a variety of sedation dentistry techniques designed to address various degrees of anxiety and special concerns.
Oral sedation, or conscious oral sedation, is taken in pill form before your treatment. The sedative produces a significantly relaxed, euphoric feeling, though you will remain conscious, aware, and responsive throughout your procedure. For more potent results, we may also recommend taking an oral sedative the night before your scheduled procedure.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation
Intravenous sedation, or IV sedation, is significantly more effective than oral conscious sedation, and involves administering a sedative directly through an IV. You will still remain responsive throughout your procedure; however, you may forget some of the experience by the time the effects wear off.
Considerations About Sedation Dentistry
Aside from patients with dental fear, and those with special needs, sedation dentistry can also benefit patients who require extensive restorative treatment, such as dental implant placement. Whether you opt for oral or IV sedation, plan to take the rest of the day off (at least), and bring a responsible adult to drive you home after your procedure is completed.
Best. Dental. Care. Ever. Next year will mark my 20th anniversary with Keelan Dental! Prior to 1997, I hated going to the dentist! My experiences were horrific! Dr. Keelan has given me a new perspective on dentistry. I appreciate that he keeps up-to-date on the latest in dentistry. I have even entrusted my children’s dental care to him. The care they have received over the past 17 years has been excellent! What’s not to love? Dr. Keelan. Mandy. Jan. The rest of the staff. They have become like family to me!
